Artist Statement

My practice explores the notion of identity, perception and power structures within social fabric, which I continuously revisit from a different perspectives and medium in search of a truth. Open to the many questions posed by that quest and possibility of many truths.

Investigating the stages and chaotic relationship between of humans and nature – that self-destructive force, with ruins serving as a metaphor for survival; the landscape is just as much an image of the sub-conscience as it is a reflection of the existing power struggles.

Pushing the boundaries of the classical painting style and tradition of the art academy, my practice has been informed by the works of Hieronymous Bosch, Francis Bacon, the films by Andrei Tarkovsky and David Lynch, and science-fiction novels including Isaac Asimov’s science fiction book series trilogy Foundation. Combining imagery from the past and the present to create a surrealist vision of the future in which I raise questions about the future consequences of a series of decisions from the past and immediate present – a manifestation of individual memories to create a surrealist future.

Although technique is influenced by classical painting style, various images of recent history and popular culture aid the diverse interpretations and contemporary representation in my practice with references to cinema and architecture.

In my approach to every series or body of work, form, essence and space continue to be is key and the intersections of these elements. Particular attention given to the figures who usually have no identity and existing in the surrounding landscape or seascape of ruin and narrative. The languages of figurative painting is extensively evident as anchor point an serve a strong narrative function in works that may be seen as semi-abstract.

Though a few motifs and symbols have been central and recur in recent works over the years, they serve as a reminder of ever present memory and power structures, however, they serve a distinct function in my investigation and visual language in the series in which they appear.
